Fourth of July may be next weekend, but Independence Day celebrations in and around Detroit are kicking off this week. Visit the Salute to America commemoration at Greenfield Village in Dearborn or head to downtown Highland for the Red, White and Blues Festival.  

Plus, the summer festivities continue with the Taylor Summer Festival, the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest and more. Contributor Peter Whorf of 90.9 WRCJ shares some more events coming up this weekend and beyond on “One Detroit Weekend.” 

Upcoming Events:  

  • The Livonia Spree takes place at Ford Field in Livonia through June 30. The festival features local bands, food vendors, carnival rides and a fireworks display as the event’s finale.  
  • The Taylor Summer Festival returns to Heritage Park in Taylor June 27-30, with carnival rides, music, refreshments, and a brand new drone show this year. 
  • The Michigan Challenge Balloonfest celebrates hot air balloons at Howell High School June 28-30. The festival also includes live entertainment, family-friendly activities and fireworks.  
  • Greenfield Village in Dearborn hosts the Salute to America celebration July 2-5. The celebration will feature a special performance of the “1812 Overture” by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. 
  • The Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak brings dinosaurs back to the zoo with Dinosauria through Sept. 8. Zoo attendees can walk the zoo trail and see animatronic dinosaurs along the way. 
  • The 4th annual Obsidian Theatre Festival presents “Back to Black: An Obsidian Cabaret” on Thursday, June 27 at the Gem Theatre Detroit. 
  • The Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores hosts the Gabriel Brass Band on Friday, June 28 as a part of its Outdoor Summer Concert series. 
  • Downtown Highland hosts the Red, White and Blues Festival on Saturday, June 29. The festival features live music, kids’ activities, food trucks, a craft and vendor show and fireworks.
